•England’s defender Jarell Quansah
England defender Jarell Quansah has been handed a two-match suspension by FIFA following his red card in the Three Lions’ Round of 16 victory over Mexico.
Quansah was sent off during England’s 3-2 win at the Azteca Stadium after a VAR review upgraded his challenge on Mexico defender Jesús Gallardo to a red card for serious foul play, reports Sky News.
FIFA’s disciplinary committee confirmed the Bayer Leverkusen defender will miss England’s quarter-final against Norway and a potential semi-final if Thomas Tuchel’s side progresses.
The suspension comes despite reports that the Football Association was considering appealing the automatic ban after FIFA recently suspended the red-card punishment handed to United States forward Folarin Balogun earlier in the tournament.
Under FIFA’s disciplinary regulations, players and officials found guilty of serious foul play receive a minimum two-match suspension.
Quansah’s absence further compounds England’s defensive problems on the right flank.
The Three Lions had already lost Tino Livramento to injury before the tournament, while Reece James was ruled out after the competition began.
Although primarily a centre-back for Bayer Leverkusen, Quansah had been deployed at right-back against Mexico before his dismissal.
