EyeCare with Dr Priscilia Imade: Adult eye care

The FrontierThe FrontierJanuary 13, 2025 2122 Minutes read0

•Dr Priscilia Imade

The remaining weeks in the month of January will be focused on “ADULT EYE CARE”. The emphasis is for all Nigerian adults to prioritize eye care in this new year.

What is Adult Eye Care?

Adult eye care refers to the maintenance and management of vision health in adults, particularly as they age. It involves regular eye examinations, early detection of potential eye diseases, and appropriate treatment or interventions.

Eye care for adults includes screening for common eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy, as well as addressing issues like refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism).

Adult eye care is essential for preserving good vision, improving the quality of life, and preventing blindness.

In Nigeria, adult eye care also extends beyond regular check-ups, as it incorporates education on proper eye health practices, access to necessary treatments, and addressing specific local challenges like limited access to healthcare facilities in rural areas.

Importance of Adult Eye Care

Adult eye care is important for several reasons, especially in Nigeria where eye diseases are prevalent, and there are significant barriers to accessing proper healthcare.

Some of the key reasons why adult eye care is important include:

1. Prevention of vision loss: Early detection and treatment of eye conditions can prevent permanent vision loss. Conditions like glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy, if left untreated, can lead to blindness. Regular eye check-ups helps identify these issues early, allowing for timely intervention.

2. Improved quality of life: Good vision is fundamental for daily activities such as reading, driving, working and interacting with others. Maintaining eye health ensures that adults can live independently and engage fully in their personal and professional lives.

3. Economic impact: Blindness and vision impairment can have significant economic consequences, both for individuals and society.

By investing in adult eye care, Nigeria can reduce the burden of vision impairment, improve productivity, and lower healthcare costs related to preventable eye diseases.

4. Managing chronic conditions:

Many chronic diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension, have eye-related complications. Regular eye examination are essential for people living with these conditions, as they help detect complications like diabetic retinopathy and hypertensive retinopathy, which can lead to blindness if untreated.

5. Aging population:

As Nigeria’s population continues to age, the prevalence of age-related eye conditions is likely to rise. Regular eye care ensures that older adults receive the attention and care they need to manage age-related vision changes.

Conclusion

Finally, prompt adult eye care is the key for maintaining vision, preventing blindness and improving quality of life. In Nigeria, the rising prevalence of eye diseases among the adult population requires urgent attention.

By focusing on early detection, managing chronic diseases, promoting healthy lifestyles and increasing access to eye care services, Nigerians can reduce the burden of eye-related diseases.

In this new year, ensuring that adults have access to the necessary resources, treatments and information about eye health will help preserve vision and enhance the overall well-being of the population.
