EyeCare with Dr Priscilia Imade: Common eye symptoms among children

The FrontierThe FrontierFebruary 17, 2025 2995 Minutes read0

•Dr Priscilia Imade

Children rely on their eyes to explore the world, learn in school and play with friends. However, many children experience eye problems that can make it difficult for them to see clearly.

In some cases, children may not even realise they have a vision problem because they assume everyone sees the way they do.

Parents and teachers need to be aware of the signs of eye problems so they can get help early.

Today’s topic – “Common eye symptoms among children” is an insight from the new book written by the author, Dr Priscilia Imade.

Some common eye problems in children and what to do about them include:

1. Frequent eye rubbing

Many children rub their eyes when they are tired, but if a child rubs their eyes often, it could be a sign of eye strain, allergies or dryness. Eye rubbing can also introduce germs into the eyes, leading to infections. Parents should encourage children to wash their hands regularly and avoid rubbing their eyes. If rubbing continues an eye check-up may be needed.

2. Squinting

A child who squints often may have trouble seeing clearly. Squinting is a way of trying to focus better but it could be a sign of nearsightedness or another vision problem.

If a child squints when reading or watching television, it is important to take them for an eye test. Wearing the right glasses can help improve their vision.

3. Holding books too close

Some children hold books or devices very close to their faces while reading. This may be a sign of difficulty seeing clearly from a normal distance which could mean they are nearsighted. Parents should observe how their children read and check if they struggle to see things from far away. An optometrist should be visited to determine if glasses are needed.

4. Difficulty reading or writing

If a child frequently loses their place while reading, skips words or struggles with writing, they might have an eye problem. Blurred or double vision can make it hard for them to follow words on a page. This can affect their learning and school performance. If a teacher notices that a child has difficulty reading, it is urgent to see an optometrist to check their eyesight.

5. Frequent headaches

Children who often complain of headaches, especially after reading or using a screen, may have an eye problem. Headaches can be caused by straining the eyes too much, especially if a child has an uncorrected vision problem. A simple eye test can help find out if glasses are needed. Take the child for an eye examination immediately.

6. Watery eyes

If a child’s eyes water often, it could be due to allergies, dryness or irritation. While watery eyes are sometimes harmless, frequent tearing may be a sign of an eye problem. If a child’s eyes are always watery, an eye doctor can check for any underlying issues. Take the child for an eye examination immediately.

7. Eye misalignment (Crossed or Wandering Eyes)

Some children have one eye that turns inwards, outwards or moves differently from the other eye. This condition is called strabismus and can affect depth perception. If left untreated, it may cause one eye to become weaker, leading to lazy eye (amblyopia). Early treatment, including glasses or eye exercises, can help correct this problem. Take the child for an eye examination immediately.

8. Light sensitivity (Discomfort in bright light)

If a child often complains that sunlight or bright indoor lights hurt their eyes, they may have light sensitivity. This can be caused by eye strain, certain eye conditions or even infections. Wearing hats or sunglasses outdoors and reducing screen brightness can help, but if the problem continues an eye doctor should be consulted. Take the child for an eye examination immediately.

9. Excessive blinking

Blinking too often can be a sign of dry eyes, eye strain or even a habit. Some children blink excessively when they are anxious, while others do it because their eyes are irritated. If a child blinks too much, parents should observe whether it happens during certain activities, such as reading or using a screen. An eye doctor can help find the cause.Take the child for an eye examination immediately.

10. Poor performance in school

Many children who struggle in school actually have vision problems. If a child has difficulty seeing the board, reading books or concentrating, it could be due to an undiagnosed eye problem. Regular eye check-ups can ensure that children have the clear vision they need to succeed in school. Take the child for an eye examination immediately.

How to protect children’s eyes

• Ensure children have regular eye check-ups, even if they do not complain about vision problems.

• Limit screen time and encourage outdoor activities to reduce eye strain.

• Teach children to wash their hands and avoid rubbing their eyes to prevent infections.

• Make sure children get enough sleep, as tired eyes can affect vision.

• Provide good lighting when they read or study.

• Watch for signs of vision problems and seek professional advice early.

Eye health is an important part of a child’s overall well-being. Early detection and treatment of eye problems can prevent future complications and help children perform better in school and daily activities. Parents and teachers should work together to ensure that every child gets the eye care they need for a bright future.
