Former governorship candidate rejects proposed states creation, recommends regional govt

•Chief Sunny Onuesoke

A prominent member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State, Chief Sunny Onuesoke, has expressed strong reservations about the ongoing push for state creation in Nigeria, arguing that it does not guarantee economic development.

Speaking on the matter today in Warri, he stated, “As for me, I don’t want to get myself involved in tribal politics. I am a renowned nationalist who takes the whole country as my constituency.”

The former governorship aspirant questioned the effectiveness of past state creation efforts, particularly in the northern region.

“Take a look at some states created in most parts of the northern axis over the past 30 years, what can they show in terms of economic development?” he asked.

He also raised doubts about the proposed Warri State, seeking clarification on its composition.

“I may not understand what you mean by Warri State. Warri State comprises where and where? I thought you were talking about creating another state from Delta?” he queried.

Referencing another ongoing proposal, he noted, “A senator from Delta North is already clamouring for a true Anioma State. How many states does Delta alone want from the proposed 31 states to be created?”

Instead of increased state creation, the nationalist advocated for a shift towards regional government.

“I am an advocate of regional government, but not armchair state creation,” he concluded.
