•Obasanjo and Kwankwaso
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Thursday night’s visit to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso at his Kano residence has added to speculations that the former president is supporting the presidential candidate of the party, Peter Obi.
Multiple sources believe Obasanjo’s visit to the former Kano State governor might not be unconnected with his support for the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket ahead of the next presidential election, reports Weekend Trust.
Recall that Obasanjo openly canvassed support for the Obi presidency in 2023.
Speaking on the visit while contributing to a social and political commentary Hausa programme on Trust Radio, Matankadi, yesterday, the former spokesman of late President Muhammadu Buhari, Malam Garba Shehu, said there’s nothing surprising about the visit.
“Definitely, the visit has to do with the 2027 election. It is not a hidden fact that President Obasanjo is in support of Peter Obi to lead Nigeria.
“And Kwankwaso is very important on the ticket…He has his followers,” he said.
Obasanjo was received by Kwankwaso and the party’s governorship candidate in the state, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo.
Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, confirmed the visit in a statement, describing it as an opportunity for “warm exchanges” between the two leaders.
He however did not give further details on what they discussed during the meeting.
Kwankwaso was a one-time former Minister of Defence in Obasanjo’s second tenure between 2003-2007, and since then, has maintained a good relationship with him.
