I was shot on my belly by anti-riot police – Nasarawa woman protester

The FrontierThe FrontierJanuary 24, 2024 3151 Minutes read0

•Nasarawa women protesters

Mrs.Grace John from Lafia, one of the members of ‘women for justice’ who embarked on a protest demanding justice in favor of David Ombugadu of the PDP, alleged she was shot by the anti-riot police deployed to disperse women protesters, following the Supreme Court verdict on the Nasarawa guber poll.

Mrs. Grace John, a 58-year-old mother said she alongside other protesters came out on the 19th to celebrate the expected victory of their candidate, David Ombugadu, whom they hoped would be declared by the Supreme Court, reports The Guardian.

“In reaction, we came out of the secretariat compound by the roadside and we went shouting why the attack on us. Suddenly the police arrived and started harassing and shouting,” John said.

“I saw myself on the floor in pool of blood gushing out of my lower stomach while others were just running in confusion. The Police were just beating and shouting.

“Later on I was helped by some people I don’t even know who took me to the Police clinic. While in Police clinic I was taken to the theater and was operated upon.

“After the operation I was in serious pain, so they referred me to the Dalhatu Specialist Hospital because they said they did not have the equipment to carry out further operations on me.”

The daughter, Miss Janet John told our reporter at the hospital that her mother was shot by the police who were sent to disperse the women who were protesting at the PDP secretariat.

According to Janet, the first doctor that operated on the mother removed the bullet from her mother’s stomach, but could not handle the other complications that resulted from the bullet inside her stomach.

She however commended the efforts of the medical personnel who did everything possible to ensure her mother survived after being shut by the police.

At the time our reporter visited her at the hospital, she was in good condition and receiving and responding to treatment.

Meanwhile, the Police authority had earlier denied that none of the women protesters were shot but were arrested and taken to the court for alleged public disturbances.

The women who have been denied bail and confined in prison custody by a magistrate court in Lafia, the state capital, have been scheduled tomorrow for hearing on bail application.
