•Olorogun Great Ovedje Ogboru
By ZIK ZULU OKAFOR
Every dawn of April 10, every year, we pause. Not merely to mark the passage of time. It is to celebrate the gift of a man whose life continues to illuminate paths, stir consciences, and uplift souls.
We chant a birthday song , in buoyant spirit, for a political mentor, benefactor, and above all, a man of rare depth and enduring dignity.
In a nation where integrity in public life has too often been sacrificed at the altar of expediency, Olorogun Great Ovedje Ogboru has remained unbent, unbought, and unswayed. Despite soul pricking challenges, his name still inspires reverence, not for the positions he’s held but for the principles he has never abandoned. And for his unwavering faith that he will ultimately get to his destination standing on the side of history; not histrionics.
Without question, he epitomises a living proof that one can remain relevant and revered in politics without falling in character.
To walk beside this fishery magnate is to learn that leadership is not the official status attained, not noise but quiet strength, not display but depth, not control but compassion. Indeed, Ogboru has ceaselessly given freely of his wisdom, his resources, and his heart, without expectation of fanfare . Far from the spirit of -politics – Nigeriana-
To write about this reticent and self evasive iconic business man is to shine the light on a rare breed, a strong breed, a leader whose soulfulness, generosity, and unwavering grace underscore the real hallmarks of greatness. And to think his parents, at his birth, took a look at him, an innocent baby boy and named him, GREAT! What a divinely inspired prophecy!
April 10 has made his staunch followers pilgrim souls.
Men, faced with adversity, emerged stronger, wiser and more compassionate. A compact and resolute group inspired to develop a deep sense of spirituality, introspection and deep connection to providence.
“And so, we who know him, from across the globe, do not just mark the passing of another year. We rise, each one of us whose lives he has touched, and stand in solemn gratitude for the gift of him,” said Igho Benson, a young medical doctor and fervent Ogboru advocate.
For his followers, Ogboru is not just a man. He is a symbol. A rare portrait of integrity in a nation that often rewards compromise. A walking story of hope for the downtrodden. A General with a soft heart, who has fought battles not to gain power, but to restore dignity and stabilize every blinking hope.
When people speak about Great Ogboru, they speak not just of success, but of substance, humane spirit, in fact, about an ultra-committed change agent, a man who stands at the intersection of grace and benevolence.
Here was a man who became one of the wealthiest Nigerians at an age less than 30. Importantly, his business success, his wealth, his staggering financial resources didn’t come through shortcuts or some open sesame. It was hard work, brilliance, and discipline, all wrapped with intensity of purpose.
Yet while others counted profits, Ogboru counted people; empowering thousands, lifting the forgotten and opening doors where seemingly impregnable walls had existed.
In a country where tribal chauvinism is applauded and cronyism is gospel, Ogboru cared not for origin or tongue. His only loyalty was to human dignity, the power of hope.
That’s why adherents of his vision would say with a glowing spirit, “You can’t go to Ogboru and leave feeling diminished.” It is not only a powerful but insightful expression.
Then came the storm of 1990. They alleged he was the financial backbone of a rebellion that was certainly not for selfish gain, but in protest of a government that had chained a nation in economic pain. He was forced into exile. And in exile, he lost what many would call everything.
But they didn’t know the man they sent away.
They didn’t know that true wealth is not in assets, but in resilience.
Ogboru would return to his fatherland after a decade stripped of the empire he built — but not stripped of the fire that built it.
And like a phoenix, he rose again, rebuilt his business, and reworked his mission.
Politics became his next destination.
And when he stepped into the political arena, not to plunder, but to serve, they tried again to stop him. Time and time again, he was robbed of palpable election victories. Not because he wasn’t the people’s choice, but because he was. And that’s what made him dangerous to them.
Even when he joined the ruling party, the very house that should have upheld, supported and protected his victory, they betrayed him. And sadly sabotaged him. But he did not sell out. He did not bend. He did not exchange his soul for a political position. It is simply not in his character.
No question, his brand is rare. Priceless.
But that’s who Great Ovedje Ogboru is.
For over three decades, his name has remained untouched by scandal. His character untainted by greed. His footsteps, uncompromised by the pressure to conform. He is a self evident proof that integrity still breathes in Nigeria.
And perhaps, what makes Ogboru even more remarkable is that he has taken all these heartbreaks, these betrayals and political crucifixions with a stoic calm. With an unwavering belief in his unalterable destiny. He has never let bitterness become his song. He walks still, head held high, with the quiet majesty of a man who knows that truth doesn’t expire.
Sir, as you celebrate your birthday, may you look back not in regret but in reverence. For what a life you have lived.
For what a man you have become.
For what a legacy you are still building.
May this new year bring peace where there’s been pressure, joy where there’s been pain, and divine reward for all the seeds of goodness you have sown.
Nigeria may not always reward its finest sons in time but history does.
And time will tell the full truth: That a man named Great Ovedje Ogboru came into this world and did not bow to power.
He walked with it and stayed clean.
Yes, the real people still see you.
The hearts you touched still beat with gratitude.
And you know what ? Despite all the betrayals and systemic sabotage, you are not a candidate for the footnotes of history. More than today’s temporal heroes, time will most certainly place you where you belong – the centerspread of history.
Happy birthday, The People’s General !
