JUST IN: Heavy rainfall floods Lagos, residents struggle to navigate streets

The FrontierThe FrontierSeptember 24, 2025 4261 Minutes read0

•Floods overwhelm Lagos

Several areas of Lagos State were heavily impacted by flooding today following a downpour that submerged streets and disrupted movement across the city.

Residents in the state on X reported difficulty leaving their homes and navigating major roads as floodwaters covered streets and blocked traffic.

In Ago Palace Way, including Apple Junction and Ago Bridge, as well as Mile 2, vehicles and motorcycles struggled to pass through the waterlogged roads, according to videos shared on social media.

One X user, JustOzed, posted, “Earlier today, September 23rd, 2025, after a heavy downpour, parts of Lagos, including Ago Palace Way (Apple Junction, Ago Bridge) and Mile 2, were flooded. I captured these scenes to show the reality we face every rainy season.”

The video shows floodwaters rising to cover gutters along the road, causing traffic congestion, reports The Guardian.

Residents highlighted both government and community responsibilities in addressing the flooding.

“The Lagos State Government has been working — clearing drains, expanding canals, and opening new water channels — but government efforts alone are not enough. We, the people, must do our part: stop dumping refuse in gutters, keep drainage paths free of blockage, obey urban planning rules. If we all cooperate, flooding can be drastically reduced. Let’s protect our city and make Lagos a true Centre of Excellence,” JustOzed added.

Reactions on social media reflected differing opinions on the causes of flooding. X user Gandalf54670444 attributed the problem to government failures, saying, “Stop this foolishness. 90% of the prob is govt failure. Rainfall volume has dropped, yet flood levels are up. No proper refuse collection infrastructure. No proper clearing of water channels. Indiscriminate sandfilling & reclamation by the government, the list is endless. Fashola did 10x better.”

Meanwhile, another X user, iam_olakunle1, argued that improper disposal of refuse remains the primary issue.

The flooding comes despite ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government to improve drainage infrastructure, expand water channels, and clear blocked waterways.

Residents continue to call for greater awareness and cooperation to reduce flood risks during the rainy season.
