Lagos govt directs businesses to open restrooms as state ramps up sanitation drive

The FrontierThe FrontierApril 18, 2026 190 Minutes read0

•Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State

The Lagos State government has intensified efforts to eliminate open defecation and improve public sanitation, revealing that 1,710 functional public toilets are currently in place across the state for residents and visitors.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the facilities have been strategically distributed to expand access, but stressed that government alone cannot meet the growing demand, reports Saturday Guardian.

He called on private businesses— including filling stations, banks, eateries, and other public-facing establishments —to make their restrooms accessible where possible, noting that such collaboration would significantly boost sanitation coverage across the state.

Wahab also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental sanitation laws, warning that individuals caught engaging in open defecation would be arrested and prosecuted.

He said the measures are necessary to safeguard public health, uphold human dignity, and maintain a cleaner environment.

“Access to sanitation is a shared responsibility,” Wahab said, urging residents and businesses to support ongoing efforts as the state continues to expand infrastructure aimed at keeping Lagos clean, safe, and habitable.
