Liverpool part ways with Arne Slot after two seasons

Liverpool Football Club have parted ways with head coach Arne Slot with immediate effect, bringing an end to the Dutchman’s two-year spell at Anfield.

The Premier League club confirmed the decision in a statement today, adding that the process of appointing a successor is already under way.

Slot joined Liverpool in June 2024 and enjoyed immediate success, leading the Reds to their 20th English league title in his first season. The achievement earned him the League Managers Association (LMA) Manager of the Year award for the 2024-25 campaign.

Under his leadership, Liverpool also reached the Carabao Cup final and advanced to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League during his debut season.

In the 2025-26 campaign, Slot guided the club to another Champions League qualification and a place in the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite competition.

Liverpool’s ownership paid tribute to the former Feyenoord manager, describing his impact on the club as “significant, meaningful and successful.”

“That this was a difficult decision for us to make as a club goes without saying,” the club said in a joint statement.

“The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and – most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves – successful.”

The club praised Slot’s leadership, professionalism and commitment, highlighting his role in delivering the club’s record-equalling 20th league title.

The statement also acknowledged the manner in which Slot helped steer the club through challenging moments, including the period following the death of forward Diogo Jota.

“The compassion and humanity he showed throughout that time said a great deal about him as a person,” the statement added.

Despite the success achieved during his tenure, Liverpool said a change in direction was necessary for the club’s future ambitions.

“We have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward,” the club said.

“The conclusion we have come to is built on a belief that the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction.”

Liverpool stressed that the decision was not a reflection of Slot’s abilities as a coach but rather the club’s desire for a different approach moving forward.

Slot leaves Anfield having secured a Premier League title and cemented his place in the club’s history.

“Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield,” the club said.
