Nigeria Labour Congress nullifies Labour Party’s National Convention, forms transition committee

•Ajaero and Abure

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has invalidated the outcome of the recent national convention of the Labour Party, held in Nnewi, Anambra State, which saw the return of Julius Abure as National Chairman, along with his National Working Committee.

In a communiqué issued following the NLC Political Commission Stakeholders meeting in Abuja, the Congress expressed a vote of no confidence in the purported convention and the leadership that emerged from it.

The communiqué, signed by prominent figures including Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, Chairman of the NLC Political Commission, and Mr. Abdulwahed Omar, former President of the NLC, outlined several key decisions. Among these decisions was the approval of the constitution of a Transition Committee, to be led by the NLC Political Commission, tasked with managing the affairs of the party in the interim period.

Furthermore, the stakeholders resolved that the transition committee should oversee the party’s operations until an all-inclusive and expansive national convention could be conducted. It was also decided that the transition committee would take full control of the party’s Secretariat nationwide.

The communiqué outlined additional directives for the Transition Committee, including the initiation of an asset recovery process for all Labour Party properties and the forensic auditing of cases involving fraud, impersonation, and forgery of government documents allegedly perpetrated by former party officers. The stakeholders emphasised the importance of diligently prosecuting the culprits, as demanded by Labour Party leader Mr. Peter Obi.

In concluding remarks, the stakeholders expressed regret over the tarnishing of the Labour Party’s reputation by what they described as the actions of “few dishonorable characters,” and affirmed their commitment to restoring integrity and transparency within the party.

The decisions taken by the NLC underscore a significant development in the internal affairs of the Labour Party, signaling a potential shift in its leadership and operational dynamics.
