The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Lagos State Branch, has announced the removal of its former Chairman, Dr. B.K.S Saheed, over alleged violations of the association’s rules and regulations.
The association disclosed that the decision was taken during an Emergency General Meeting (EGM) held on April 18, 2026, at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, Lagos, reports Daily Independent.
In a statement jointly signed by the new Chairman of the association, Dr. Ewonowo Temidire Sunday, and the Secretary, Dr. O.J Hassan, the NMA said the Congress of the association, which it described as its highest decision-making body, deliberated extensively on allegations against Saheed before resolving to remove him from office with immediate effect.
According to the statement, the disciplinary and constitutional procedures guiding such action were duly followed in line with the provisions of the association’s rules and regulations.
“The Congress, being the highest decision-making body of NMA Lagos State, extensively deliberated on the issues presented before it and subsequently resolved, through a valid and constitutional process, that Dr. B.K.S Saheed be removed from office with immediate effect,” the statement read.
The association further declared that Saheed had ceased to function or act in any capacity as Chairman or elected officer of the Lagos branch of the NMA.
It consequently warned government agencies, institutions, corporate organisations, financial institutions and stakeholders against engaging with him on behalf of the association.
“Accordingly, all individuals, institutions, organisations, corporate bodies, financial institutions, government agencies and partners are hereby advised to refrain from conducting any official transaction, engagement, negotiation, or correspondence with Dr. B.K.S Saheed on behalf of NMA Lagos State,” it added.
The association announced that, in line with Section 8(1) of its rules and regulations, the former First Vice Chairman, Dr. Ewonowo Temidire Sunday, had officially assumed office as Chairman of the Lagos branch.
The new leadership reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and professional interests of doctors across the state, noting that it was engaging relevant stakeholders on issues affecting members in various health institutions.
The NMA also raised concerns over what it described as increasing cases of harassment and assault of doctors by relatives of patients in some health facilities.
“The Association strongly condemns every form of violence against healthcare workers and reiterates its solidarity and full support for affected members while pursuing appropriate interventions to prevent future occurrences,” the statement noted.
It further disclosed that discussions were ongoing with relevant institutions over salary delays and non-payment affecting doctors in some centres, expressing optimism that sustainable solutions would soon be reached.
The association also appreciated members, past leaders, affiliates and stakeholders for their support and commitment to the unity and progress of the Lagos branch during the leadership transition.
“NMA Lagos State remains resolute in its commitment to due process, institutional integrity, professional advocacy, and the welfare of all doctors in Lagos State,” the statement added.
