Police arrest, repatriate $245 million ponzi scheme fugitive to China

The FrontierThe FrontierMay 6, 2026 901 Minutes read0

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), through the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja, has arrested and repatriated a Chinese fugitive, Xu Qing, to the People’s Republic of China on allegations of involvement in a Ponzi scheme involving illegal public deposits estimated at $245 million.

According to a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, the operation followed a formal request from Chinese authorities, who declared the suspect wanted in Beijing for financial fraud.

He said the suspect fled from China to Nigeria on November 5, 2024, to evade arrest, following a warrant issued against him on November 12, 2025, by the Qingdao Public Security’s Shinan Sub-Bureau.

Acting on intelligence-led surveillance, operatives of INTERPOL NCB Abuja tracked and arrested Xu Qing at a factory located in Olowotedo, Siun Village, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State on April 24, 2026.

He was subsequently repatriated to China on April 28, 2026, through bilateral police cooperation arrangements to face prosecution.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation in combating transnational organised crime.

He also advised Nigerian employers and business entities to conduct due diligence, including background checks through security agencies, before engaging foreign nationals.

The Force reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that Nigeria is not a safe haven for fugitives and to continue collaboration with global law enforcement agencies.
