Strike looms in varsities over delay in payment of February salaries by FG

•NLC President Joe Ajero

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has threatened to mobilise its members to down tools over the continuous delay in the payment of their February 2026 salaries.

President of SSANU, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, made the threat yesterday, in a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja.

According to Ibrahim, most staff of federal universities celebrated Ramadan without their salaries, stressing that the situation has created significant financial strain for members and their immediate families, reports Saturday Independent.

He said beyond the personal hardship it imposes, the delay in salary payment is steadily eroding confidence in the system, lowering staff morale, and inevitably affecting productivity and overall institutional performance within our universities.

“The leadership of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) wishes to bring to the attention of the public the growing hardship being experienced by staff of federal universities across the country due to the delay in payment of their February 2026 salaries,” Ibrahim lamented.

He said SSANU considers this development deeply troubling and calls on the relevant authorities, especially the GIFMIS office in the office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF), to urgently address the delay and ensure the immediate payment of February salaries to restore confidence and stability within the university system.

SSANU also expressed serious concern over the slow pace of the ongoing renegotiation process between SSANU, NASU and the federal government.

The union noted that the stability of Nigeria’s university system depends not only on dialogue but also on the timely implementation of agreements and responsible communication with the public.

He said SSANU believes that the Ministry of Education must demonstrate stronger commitment, urgency, and leadership to ensure that the renegotiation process reaches a logical and mutually acceptable conclusion.

SSANU, however, made a four-point demand on the Federal Government, urging it to ensure the immediate payment of the outstanding February 2026 salaries of federal university staff, especially since most of our members are either observing the Ramadan fast or the Lenten fast.

Other demands include the need to accelerate the ongoing renegotiation process with non-teaching university unions to bring it to a credible and conclusive end as well as provide clear and accurate information to the Nigerian public regarding the true status of negotiations.

“Anything short of the above will clearly invite our unions to seek redress in every legal means possible, including but not limited to withdrawal of our services and picketing of government offices concerned.

“SSANU remains committed to constructive engagement with the federal government in the interest of sustaining industrial harmony and protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s university system,” Ibrahim stated.
