Timely intervention critical to reducing stroke deaths – Experts

The FrontierThe FrontierApril 19, 2026 802 Minutes read0

•At the official launch of “Unmerited Grace,” a powerful memoir by stroke survivor, Temi Edun

Health experts have emphasised the critical importance of rapid response in stroke emergencies, noting that timely intervention significantly improves survival rates and reduces the risk of long-term disability.

They stressed that immediate medical attention at the onset of symptoms can be life-saving, underscoring the need for increased public awareness and swift action, reports Sunday Guardian.

This was at the official launch of “Unmerited Grace,” a powerful memoir by stroke survivor, Temi Edun which took place in Lagos, drawing a distinguished audience and sparking critical conversations around stroke awareness, preparedness, and care in Nigeria.

The book chronicles Temi Edun’s journey through stroke and recovery, told through a multi-perspective narrative that brings together the voices of doctors, physiotherapists, family members, and friends who experienced the journey alongside her. It offers a deeply human account of survival, resilience, and the often unseen emotional and physical toll on both patients and their families.

Beyond the literary milestone, the event served a broader purpose: addressing a growing but insufficiently understood health challenge. Attendees were offered complimentary blood pressure checks as part of efforts to promote early detection and prevention.

US-trained, double board-certified Interventional Radiologist and Founder of IRDOC Nigeria, Dr. Ninalowo, in a striking revelation, noted that only two hospitals in Nigeria, Euracare and First Cardiology Consultants are currently fully equipped and designated as stroke-ready facilities. This he said underscores the urgent need for expanded infrastructure, greater public awareness, and improved emergency response systems.

CEO of Daniel Ford International and husband of the author, Yemi Edun, in his opening remarks shared personal reflections on what had been, until now, a largely private journey. Temi Edun followed with brief remarks before yielding the stage to stroke expert, Dr. Hammed Ninalowo.

The event continued with a roundtable discussion featuring Dr. Hammed Ninalowo, Temi Edun, and Dr. Folakemi Edun, a London-based physician who was closely involved in the care and recovery journey, bringing both professional expertise and personal insight to the experience.

The session was moderated by Kunle Kasumu, host of Channels TV’s Book Club, who guided a thoughtful and engaging conversation bridging clinical expertise with lived experience.

Audience participation further enriched the discussion, with attendees sharing personal stories and raising important questions around stroke response, prevention, and care.

The book was officially launched by Mr. Gboyega Fatimilehin, marking a significant milestone in what is expected to evolve into a broader campaign for awareness and advocacy. Proceeds from the book will support charitable initiatives aimed at assisting stroke patients, particularly in accessing post-stroke physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
