Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, under the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), have been directed to embark on an indefinite strike starting tomorrow, raising fresh concerns over disruptions in public primary and secondary schools in Abuja.
The directive was issued by the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) of the union following an emergency meeting held in Gwagwalada, Abuja, on Friday, reports Sunday Guardian.
The communiqué, jointly signed by State Chairman Abdullahi Shafa, State Secretary Margaret Jethro, and State Publicity Secretary Ibukun Adekeye, instructed all teachers to comply fully with the industrial action and await further directives.
Parents and guardians were also advised to keep their children at home until further notice to ensure their safety during the strike period.
According to the union, the strike will continue indefinitely until all outstanding demands are addressed by the FCT Administration led by Nyesom Wike.
The decision follows the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the Minister on March 11, which lapsed on March 29, alongside an additional 28-day grace period granted to authorities
While acknowledging the Minister’s efforts in implementing the ₦70,000 minimum wage and settling nine months’ salary arrears owed to primary school teachers, the union expressed concern over unresolved welfare issues.
It noted that a committee set up on July 7, 2025, to harmonise outstanding entitlements within two weeks has yet to deliver its report or lead to tangible outcomes.
The union is also demanding the removal of the “vacancies” condition tied to teacher promotions and a comprehensive review of the 2024 promotion exercise conducted by the FCT Civil Service Commission to ensure fair advancement for eligible teachers.
SWEC members expressed dissatisfaction over what they described as continued silence from authorities despite repeated engagements and deadlines.
“Following exhaustive deliberations and the lack of response to our legitimate demands, the Council has resolved that all public primary and secondary school teachers in the FCT shall proceed on an indefinite strike from Monday until all issues are addressed,” the communiqué stated.
The development is expected to significantly impact academic activities across public schools in Abuja, leaving thousands of students out of classrooms until further notice.
