The world is home to a large array of nations that come with their distinguished characteristics from culture to history, down to geography.

Among them, a select few stand out not just for their notable heritage, but also for their conspicuous small size, reports Vanguard.

Here is a list of the top 5 smallest countries in the world, per ranking from Forbes India.

Vatican City

With a square kilometer of 0.44, {44 Hectares} Vatican City holds the position of the world’s smallest city. Nestled within the heart of Rome, it was established as an independent sovereign state in 1929 through the Lateran Treaty and serves as the spiritual and administrative center of the Roman Catholic Church.

According to the World Population Review, it has a population of less than 500 people as at 2024 which is the lowest it has been since 1950 but despite its small population size, the country boasts a wealth of cultural and historical significance.

Its iconic landmarks, which includes the St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel, attract millions of visitors each year and wields considerable influence, both religiously and diplomatically, making it a unique entity on the global stage.

Monaco

Monaco is a tiny sovereign city-state located on the French Riviera and is recorded as the second smallest country in the world, covering just 2.02 square kilometers.

With a population of over 38,000 it is known for its luxurious lifestyle, stunning coastline, and vibrant casino culture, and is also famous for hosting the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix and the annual Monte-Carlo Casino events, making it a glamorous destination for tourists and high-profile events alike.

Formally established as a principality in the 13th century, it is governed by the Grimaldi family, with Prince Albert II currently at the helm and is seen as the playground for the rich and famous.

Nauru

Nauru, an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, is renowned for being the third smallest country in the world by area, covering just 21 square kilometers (8.1 square miles). This small republic, located in the northeastern part of Australia, is often overlooked but proudly offers a unique blend of natural beauty and rich history.

Discovered by European explorers in the 18th century, Nauru gained independence in 1968 but still faces ongoing efforts to diversify its economy and address environmental concerns.

Despite its size, Nauru is home to over 11,000 people with a vibrant culture, featuring traditional music, dance, and community gatherings and visitors can explore its stunning beaches and coral reefs, making it a hidden gem in the vast Pacific.

Tuvalu

Tuvalu, an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, is recognized as the fourth smallest country in the world, with an area of just 26 square kilometers (10 square miles). Home of over 9000 people, this remote paradise lies halfway between Hawaii and Australia and is known for its stunning lagoons and rich biodiversity.

Tuvalu became independent in 1978 and its economy is primarily based on fishing, agriculture, and remittances from citizens living abroad. However, the nation faces serious threats from climate change, particularly rising sea levels that jeopardize its future.

Despite its challenges, Tuvalu is proud of its unique cultural heritage, which includes traditional music, dance, and crafts. The serene landscapes and welcoming communities make it a hidden gem for travelers seeking a peaceful getaway.

San Marino

San Marino, surrounded by the lands of Italy, is the fifth smallest country in the world, spanning just 61 square kilometers (24 square miles).

It was formally established in A.D. 301, and claims to be the oldest republic still in existence, with a rich history and a unique political system where visitors are drawn to its charming streets, historical sites, and vibrant culture.
