University of Ibadan students protest over 82 days power outage

The FrontierThe FrontierJanuary 22, 2025 2150 Minutes read0

Students of the University of Ibadan (UI) staged a peaceful protest today over an unresolved power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH), the medical arm of the institution.

The UCH has been experiencing a power outage for the past 82 days, reports Nigerian Tribune.

The situation, as reliably gathered, is traceable to a substantial debt running into millions of naira owed by the institution to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

The electricity distribution company had previously disconnected the hospital’s power supply in November 2023 for the same reason.

The unresolved debt, which has resulted in prolonged darkness and the paralysis of medical activities, forced the students to take to the streets in protest.

Speaking with newsmen during the protest, the President of the Students’ Union (SU), Bolaji Aweda, said the institution has been in total darkness for the past 82 days.

According to him, “We are protesting against what is happening, and of course, our students are affected.

“For 82 days, there has been no light at UCH, and this is due to the inability of UCH to pay its electricity bill to IBEDC.

“IBEDC has demanded that UCH settle its debt before they will restore power.”
