US election: Biden, Trump set for White House meeting

•Donald Trump and Joe Biden

President Joe Biden will meet with President-elect Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday, marking a key step toward a peaceful transition.

Biden, on Thursday, pledged to work closely with Trump to facilitate a smooth transfer of power.

According to the White House, the meeting between the two leaders, scheduled for 11:00 a.m. local time (1600 GMT) in the Oval Office, comes as Biden prepares to step down from office in January 2025.

Both leaders are expected to discuss essential issues to ensure a seamless transition and address any immediate challenges ahead of January’s formal transfer of power.

Earlier, Biden, in a gesture of respect and commitment to democratic principles, personally congratulated Trump on his victory shortly after the election results were confirmed.

Trump secured 291 electoral votes, surpassing the 270 needed to win the presidency, while his Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris, garnered 222 electoral votes.

The Republican candidate who will return to the White House after his unsuccessful reelection bid in 2020, also won the popular vote.

As is tradition, Trump will be inaugurated as president and officially take office on Monday, January 20, 2025, following the customary transition period after the election.

Between now and 20 January 2025, President-elect Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance will work with their transition team to coordinate the handover from President Biden’s administration.
