•Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State

The Kano State government has set aside the sum of N1.5 billion ahead of its planned mass wedding programme for 3,000 beneficiaries.

The Commander-General of the Hisbah Board in the state, Sheikh Ibrahim Daurawa, made the disclosure today while briefing journalists on preparations ahead of the programme, reports The PUNCH.

“The Kano State Government is to spend N1.5bn on the entire mass wedding programme which will soon be conducted in the state,” Daurawa said.

He explained that part of the money would be spent on the purchase of furniture, food items, dowry, clothing materials for the couples, and a capital of N100,000 to be given to each of the brides, among other expenses under the scheme.

According to him, the board, in collaboration with the State Ministry of Health, had already begun medical screening for prospective couples to ascertain their health status.

“The mandatory medical screening is for hepatitis, pregnancy, HIV, genotype as well as other sexually transmitted diseases,” the Commander-General said.

Daurawa noted that no fewer than 5,000 people applied for the programme, out of which 3,000 would be selected after the medical screening exercise.

While appreciating the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for initiating the programme, Daurawa said the governor is expected to fix the date for the event.

Recall that the medical screening commenced on Monday, May 8, 2026, with couples from 24 of the 44 local government areas of the state.
