Bishop Oyedepo’s airstrip: Security experts back aviation minister amid revocation calls

The Forum of Security Experts (FOSE) has expressed its support for Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, regarding the allocation of airstrips to Bishop David Oyedepo’s Living Faith Church and other qualified individuals, despite ongoing controversy and calls for revocation from some lawmakers.

The lawmakers had raised security concerns surrounding the airstrip licenses, prompting a heated debate about the implications for aviation safety in Nigeria, reports Vanguard.

However, Keyamo has clarified that the House of Representatives did not issue a directive to revoke any private airstrip licenses, reinforcing the legality and importance of these allocations.

In a statement signed by Danladi Adamu, the forum commended Keyamo for his efforts to promote growth within Nigeria’s aviation sector, particularly through modernization initiatives aimed at enhancing airport efficiency, safety, and security.

It highlighted several benefits associated with the allocation of airstrips, including economic growth, job creation, and local development.

The security experts emphasised that private airstrips improve access to remote areas, facilitating humanitarian aid and medical evacuations, which are crucial for national emergency response.

Additionally, FOSE pointed out that private airstrips can promote tourism by providing easier access to Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and natural attractions, thereby boosting local economies and supporting small businesses.

They urged the National Assembly to support the Ministry’s initiatives aimed at enhancing aviation security and development, stressing the broader implications of allocating airstrips for national security, economic diversification, and agricultural development.

The statement added, “By working together, we can reposition the Nigerian aviation industry for financial capability and economic viability. Keyamo’s leadership has instilled confidence in Nigeria’s aviation future.

“The benefits of allocating airstrips to qualified individuals extend beyond economic growth. They also enhance national security by providing alternative landing strips for emergency situations.

“Private airstrips also support agricultural development, enabling efficient transportation of perishable goods to markets. This boosts Nigeria’s agricultural sector, promoting food security and economic diversification.”
