BREAKING: UniAbuja appoints new VC amidst controversies

•Prof. Aisha Maikudi

The University of Abuja has announced the appointment of Prof. Aisha Maikudi as Vice Chancellor amidst controversies and protests.

This was disclosed in a statement by the acting Director of Public Affairs of the institution, Habib Yakoob today.

Controversies trailed the appointment process of the new substantive VC for the institution, reports The PUNCH.

Stakeholders had earlier accused the governing council of planning to appoint Maikudi who was tagged as not having the required number of years of experience needed to be appointed VC of a university.

The appointment process also led to division between members of the governing council of the institution with certain members shunning meetings convened by the council as regards the appointment.

“The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, under the chairmanship of Air Vice-Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita (Rtd), has approved the appointment of Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi as the 7th Substantive vice-chancellor of the University.

“The appointment was announced during the 77th Extraordinary Meeting of Council on Tuesday

315t December 2024.

The appointment takes effect from January 1, 2025, and it is for a nonrenewable tenure of five years.

“Maikudi emerged as the best among 10 shortlisted candidates and interviewed by the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board of the University, in line with the extant regulations governing the process,” the statement said.
