FRSC cracks down on fake diplomatic, unauthorised plate numbers

•FRSC officials on duty

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has announced an immediate clampdown on fake diplomatic and unauthorised plate numbers on vehicles across Nigerian roads.

In a statement by the Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide yesterday, noted that the directive, issued by the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, is part of efforts to strengthen national security and curb criminal activities facilitated by fraudulent vehicle identification.

According to the FRSC, the fake number plates, which include inscriptions such as Diplomatic Number Plates, NYCN, Peace Ambassador, NAUS, CYMS, UN-Unity 01, UN-AMB, and NANS, among others, are neither produced by the FRSC’s official plants nor issued by state motor licensing authorities.

The Corps revealed that these plates are often used by criminals for illegal and nefarious activities.

To address this, the Corps Marshal has ordered a nationwide tactical enforcement operation across all FRSC formations.

Vehicles found using these unauthorised plates will be impounded, and their owners prosecuted.

Additionally, the FRSC will collaborate with other security agencies to trace and shut down the sources of these fake plates, ensuring that both producers and users are held accountable.

The FRSC cautioned the public to report individuals using such number plates to law enforcement agencies. Current users have also been advised to discontinue the use of these illegal plates immediately to avoid prosecution.

The Corps reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s security architecture and warned that no offenders would be spared.
