JUST IN: Varsity lecturers begin indefinite strike

The FrontierThe FrontierFebruary 12, 2025 4320 Minutes read0

•Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH)

Clinical lecturers at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, have begun an indefinite strike over the non-payment of their salaries under the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).

In a statement signed by the Chairman, Dr. Ruth Ilori, and Secretary, Dr. Abraham Akinbola, today, the lecturers condemned the salary shortfall, describing it as unfair, discriminatory, and unjust.

According to the statement made available to journalists, the strike followed the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum issued by the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), South-West Zone.

It would be recalled that the MDCAN, South-West Zone, had demanded a full implementation of CONMESS for clinical lecturers, reports The Guardian.

They lamented that only universities in the South-West have refused to comply with CONMESS, leading to brain drain and setbacks in medical education within the region.

The lecturers called on relevant stakeholders to intervene urgently, warning that failure to address the issue could further destabilize the medical education system in Nigeria.
