Lionel Messi is set to be reunited with former Barcelona teammate Luis Suarez at Inter Miami, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Messi and Suarez spent six seasons at Barcelona together, forging a lethal tandem with Neymar that tormented defenses around Europe, reports AFP.
During that time, the trident won four La Liga crowns, the Champions League, and the Club World Cup.
There were doubts about Inter Miami’s ability to sign the Uruguayan due to MLS rules that prohibit teams from signing more than three players above the wage ceiling.
However, it would appear the Florida based club have found a way around the regulations, following reports that a one-year deal has been agreed.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the news on social media, tweeting: “Luís Suárez to Inter Miami, all set to be sealed and announced — here we go!
“Contract ready after verbal agreement reached one month ago — one-year deal for Suárez.
“Deal will also include an option for further season.
“Messi and Suárez, together again.”
Suarez will also join up with former Barca teammates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, as Miami owner David Beckham gets the band back together.
Suarez and Messi played at Barcelona together from 2014 to 2020, forming a legendary attacking trident alongside Neymar. Along with Alba and Busquets, they won the UEFA Champions League and Club World Cup in 2015 and won four La Liga titles.
Suarez played in Gremio’s final home game of the season, scoring the winner against Vasco de Gama. After the game, he braved the rain to enjoy a lap around the field to say goodbye to the local fans as they chanted his name, with his wife and three children joining him on the field amid emotional scenes.
The 36-year-old posted a farewell message on social media, writing: “My family and I want to thank everyone for the love and we lived it (Saturday) in the Arena Do Gremio. It was an incredible, unforgettable day that we will take in our hearts forever.”
After Messi signed with Miami in July, speculation suggested Suarez would leave Brazil for the MLS. He then swiftly negotiated a deal with Gremio to let him out of his contract a year early.
Although he has been battling chronic knee issues for years, Suarez played 32 league games and scored 15 goals for Gremio. He contributed 24 goals and 17 assists this year in all competitions.
