Nigerian politics is evil, says Afrobeats star Davido

The FrontierThe FrontierAugust 17, 2026 2132 Minutes read0

•Davido and Governor Adeleke of Osun State

Afrobeats singer, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has reacted to criticism surrounding the recently concluded Osun State governorship election, insisting that he stood by his family and played his part without relying on anyone.

Davido, who is from Osun State, made the remarks in a post on his verified X handle today, following the victory of his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, in Saturday’s governorship election.

The singer said he did not “buy anybody” to support the election, stressing that he acted independently and backed his family on his own.

“I brought no one. No one defended me. I backed my family on my own. I have done my job,” Davido wrote.

He also expressed his disillusionment with Nigerian politics, describing it as “evil” and saying he would not participate in it until the system improves.

“Nigerian politics is evil and I don’t want to be a part of it till God helps us,” he added.

His comments came two days after the Osun governorship election in which Governor Ademola Adeleke secured a second term in office.

Adeleke, who contested the election on the platform of the Accord Party, defeated the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO.

The governor polled 511,067 votes against Oyebamiji’s 444,815 votes, winning the election by a margin of 66,252 votes.

The election was held across the state on Saturday, August 15, 2026.

According to the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Adeleke won in 19 local government areas, including Ife Central, Orolu, Boluwaduro, Ede South, Ife North, Ilesa West, Ifedayo, Osogbo, Oriade, Odo Otin, Ife East, Ifelodun, Iwo, Ede North, Ila, Ayedire, Ejigbo, Egbedore and Ayedaade.

Oyebamiji, a former Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning in Osun State, conceded defeat after the results were announced.

Adeleke’s victory means he will continue as governor of Osun State for another four-year term.

Davido had been vocal in his support for his uncle during the election campaign, frequently using his social media platforms to mobilise support and promote the governor’s re-election bid.

His latest comments, however, appeared to distance him from partisan politics, with the singer saying he would only return to political participation if the political environment improves.

The Osun election had attracted significant attention due to the contest between the incumbent governor and the APC candidate, with political parties and observers closely monitoring the process across the state.
