Barcelona reach full agreement to retain key duo for one more year

The FrontierThe FrontierFebruary 15, 2025 2431 Minutes read0

•Robert Lewandowski and Inigo Martinez

Barcelona have secured the continuation of Robert Lewandowski and Inigo Martinez for another season, ensuring their presence in the squad for the upcoming campaign.

According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, the club has already reached agreements with both players to extend their contracts for an additional year.

Both Lewandowski and Martinez had clauses in their contracts that allowed for an automatic extension based on performance. The Polish forward is on the verge of triggering his renewal clause, which requires him to play a set number of matches.

If he takes the field in Barcelona’s next game, it will be his 34th appearance of the season, officially activating his contract extension until 2026.

However, regardless of whether this clause is fulfilled, an agreement is already in place to keep him at the club for another season.

Martinez’s case is different and tricky

As for Martinez, his contract stipulates that he must feature in at least 60% of Barcelona’s matches for his renewal to be activated.

The club and the player have already agreed on an extension, as manager Hansi Flick considers him a crucial part of the squad. However, Barcelona have encountered financial hurdles in finalising his contract renewal.

Meanwhile, we recently reported that after successfully extending the contracts of key players, Barcelona are now struggling to meet La Liga’s Financial Fair Play regulations for Martinez’s renewal.

Now what?

The club is currently in discussions with league officials to find a way to register Martinez’s renewal while staying within financial constraints. Until a solution is reached, the defender’s extension remains pending.

With a potential total of 61 matches to be played this season if Barcelona reach the finals of both the Champions League and Copa del Rey, Martinez would need to participate in at least 37 games to trigger his automatic renewal.

So far, he has featured in 29 matches, but only 28 count towards the clause since one of his appearances did not meet the minimum 45-minute requirement. The club remains hopeful that a resolution will be found to secure his future.
