Commissioner finds schools deserted during surprise visit to LG Council

The FrontierThe FrontierMarch 20, 2025 2901 Minutes read0

•Sokoto State governor, Ahmad Aliyu

The Sokoto State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Professor. A.L. Ala, made an unannounced early morning visit to schools in Wurno Zone on Monday at 7:45 am, only to find them completely empty—neither principals nor teachers were present.

Accompanied by the State APC Chairman, Hon. Isa Sadiq Achida, and Wurno Local Government Chairman, Hon. Abba Isa Sadiq Achida, the commissioner toured schools in Alkammu, Kwasare, Sesawa, Marnona, Chancho, Achida, Lahodo, Gidan Inda Munki, and Dinawa, reports Nigerian Tribune.

The absence of educators across these institutions raised serious concerns about the state of education in the area.

Expressing his frustration, Hon. Isa Sadiq Achida condemned the situation in his local government and emphasised the urgent need for reforms to enforce discipline and accountability in schools.

Following the inspection, Professor Ala held a high-level advocacy meeting with the Wurno Local Government chairman, council members, traditional leaders, school principals, and teachers to address the challenges facing the education sector. The chairman pledged full support for reforms, while Hon. Abba Isa announced the creation of a monitoring committee to oversee schools and restore standards.

Among the dignitaries present were Professor Mustapha Namakka Tukur, Executive Secretary of the Female Education Board; Abubakar Umar Salame, Director of Administration; and other ministry officials. Traditional rulers, including the District Head of Wurno, Maigima Alhaji Kabiru Chigari Alhassan, and Danmalikin Achida, Alhaji Abubakar Umar, also expressed their commitment to supporting the government’s education reforms.

The visit underscores the Sokoto State government’s determination to address staff absenteeism and improve education quality for students in Wurno Zone.
