Mother of 4 falls from steep area, dies while hiking with children

A mother of four tragically died on Wednesday after falling from a steep area while hiking at Purgatory Chasm State Reservation in Sutton, Massachusetts.

Carolyn Sanger, 49, of Topsfield, fell approximately 50 to 75 feet, according to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office. She was pronounced dead at the scene, reports Fox News.

The incident occurred shortly after 2 p.m., prompting a response from Massachusetts State Police, officials told Fox News Digital.

Sanger had been hiking with three of her children and other family members when the fall happened, according to Sutton police.

There were multiple medical professionals already hiking in the area who provided immediate aid following the fall.

Despite their efforts, “she was pronounced dead a short time later,” Sutton Police shared in a statement on Facebook.

Massachusetts State Police troopers secured the scene, and the incident remains under investigation by state police detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.

“We offer our condolences to the family and loved ones of the decedent,” the Massachusetts State Police said in a statement.

Sutton Police also extended their sympathies to the grieving family.

As of yesterday afternoon, a GoFundMe page created on behalf of the Sanger family had raised nearly $50,000.

“For those that knew Carrie, know that she was a bright light; a wonderful, selfless mother who has raised four incredible, respectful, responsible kids,” the fundraiser’s organizers wrote.

“She was a friend to all and her smile and kind spirit will be greatly missed. She passed too early – but she left the earth doing what she loved, with the ones she loved.”

Purgatory Chasm, where the incident occurred, is a popular Massachusetts state park known for its dramatic granite formations and a chasm that plunges as deep as 70 feet, according to Boston 25 News.
