Varsity rankings: Oxford is world’s number one, Covenant best in Nigeria

Times Higher Education, THE, has come out with its 2024 rankings of universities with Oxford University, England retaining its position as the number one in the world.

At the local level, Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, was ranked the best in the country and among the top 1,000 in the world.

At the continental level, the University of Cape Town in South Africa was ranked first and 676th worldwide.

The University of Ibadan, and the Federal University of Technology, Akure, were ranked third, followed by CU in the national ranking at the national level.

A total of 1,904 universities across 108 countries were ranked in the exercise.

Other highly ranked universities in the country are the University of Ilorin, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Afe Babalola University, the University of Benin, the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, the Lagos State University, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Obafemi Awolowo University, and the University of Port Harcourt.

On the African continent, no Nigerian university made the top 10 category. South Africa dominated it with eight universities, Egypt has one and Ghana also has one.

At the global level, Stanford University, United States, was ranked second, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology, United States, and Harvard University, United States.
